Game Design Workshop 1

Poster 1

The first poster is about Don’t Starve. This is the game that I chose to analyze in this semester. With this poster I want to convey the atmosphere, theme, feeling, the game world and the characters.

This game can be played with multiple characters, but Wilson kind of the protagonist of this game.
At the start of the game, Wilson is the only character that can be choosen. As the player progresses in the game, other characters become available. Since Wilson is the first playable character, I placed it centrally on the poster. And to make it clear that it is possible to play with different characters, I have placed three more characters under Wilson.

In Don't starve it's all about survival. I tried to make this clear with HUD elements. At the bottom of the poster HUD elements are located which shows that gathering is a part of the game. And around Wilson I have put 3 icons of organs (heart, stomach and brain) which shows that these three elements are needed to be taken care of to survive. At the top of the poster are two other HUD elements located. The left one are the days which shows how long this character has sruvoved in the game world. And at the left there is an element which shows the current time and season. Which also has an influence on the gameplay.

Darkness and lighting are essential in this game. I tried to show that the characters are safer in the light areas, like by the fire, than in the dark areas. I chose an terrified Wilson on purpose and placed shadow monster behind him. These shadow monster are a great danger to the player and they hide in the dark. That is another reason why I placed them behind Wilson and in the dark. On the poste I try to make clear that the atmosphere of this game is kind a spooky and dark.

In Don’t starve it is crucial to explore the world and discover new things. That is why I placed a piece of the world in the background and also a partially revealed map. At the start of the game, the player has a full blacked out map. As the player discovers new locations, the map becomes more visible.

Poster 2

With this poster I try to describe the "Building blocks" of the game that I will develop.

First of all I choose to make a colorful poster, because I want to create this game world which is very colorful and beautiful. This world is in a different dimension, hence the portal at the bottom left of the screen. If you look closely you will see that a city can be seen in the portal. This means that a portal can travel from a fantasy world to the real world.

The world is represented as a map the background of the map is a starry sky. I purposely did this because the dimension you are traveling to as a player is in a different universe.

On the map you can see that there are different locations and that all three have their own flora and fauna. The monsters will therefore have a different appearance based on their living environment, because they have evolved to survive under certain circumstances. I also want to make clear through this poster that we are going for a cartoony style in terms of characters and art.

I also want to make clear that there is a path which needs to be travelled to get back to the real world. At the end of the path I’ve added an butterfly which has an broken left wing and a whole one on the right. This represents the butterfly effect. Whit this detail I hope to make it clear that certain actions in the game will have consequences.
